"Marshall, my Facebook leads are garbage. They never answer the phone. Half the numbers are wrong. They are all tire kickers."
Almost every home service owner who runs Meta ads says this within the first 60 days. And they are not entirely wrong.
But the cause is rarely what they think.
Meta optimizes for the metric you tell it to optimize for.
If you tell Meta "get me leads," it gets you leads. The cheapest possible leads. Whoever clicks the button fastest.
That includes the woman who saw your ad while half asleep on the couch and tapped the button to make it go away. That includes the kid who clicks every ad on his feed. That includes everyone who is not actually ready to buy.
The algorithm is doing exactly what you asked.
The fix is to ask for something different.
Last week I sat on a call with one of my pest control clients in the southeastern US. They had this exact problem. Lead cost was $14. Close rate was 8%. Most leads ghosted.
We rebuilt the form together.
Here is what we changed.
Instead of a dropdown for pest type, we put an open text field. "What pests do you need help with?"
Why this matters. Bots and tire kickers do not fill out open text. Real customers do. The simple act of typing a sentence filters out 30 to 40% of the junk.
We added one more open text. "How soon do you want service? (ASAP, this week, next week, just looking)"
Why this matters. Buyers say "ASAP" or "this week." Tire kickers say "just looking." You now know which leads to call first and which to skip entirely.
This is the big one. We turned on Meta's SMS verification. The user has to confirm their actual mobile number with a text code before the form submits.
Why this matters. Wrong phone numbers drop to near zero. The lead has to give you a real number they can receive a text on.
Lead cost went from $14 to about $25. Close rate went from 8% to 18%.
Cost per close DROPPED. Even though each lead costs more, you close double the percentage.
The math is the math.
Lead cost is a vanity metric. Cost per closed job is the real metric. If you can double cost per lead and double close rate, you have made every dollar work twice as hard.
Run this rebuild on your Facebook lead form this week. It takes about 30 minutes and Podium or any decent CRM can handle the new form fields.
You will know within 14 days whether it worked.
