How to spy on competitors for free

THE FREE SPY TOOL EVERY HOME SERVICE OWNER FORGETS EXISTS

Meta Ad Library is the most under leveraged tool in home services.

It is free. It is public. It shows every single ad every business in the world is currently running on Facebook and Instagram. You can search by business name, by country, by ad category, and by date range. You can see exactly how long each ad has been running, which placements it is in, and what the creative looks like.

And almost no home service owner uses it.

Every week another owner tells me Facebook ads do not work because another owner told them so. The first thing I do is pull that other owner up in Meta Ad Library.

Most of the time, they are running nothing. Or one ad. Or one ad with a weak offer that has been live for 6 days. That is your answer right there. Facebook does not work for that owner because they are not actually running Facebook properly. Ignore the advice and keep going.

HOW TO USE IT

Step one. Go to facebook.com/ads/library. Bookmark it.

Step two. Search your top 5 local competitors by business name. Filter by All Ads and your country.

Step three. Look at three things on each one. How many ads are they running. How long have the ads been running. What is the offer.

A competitor with 20 ads live for 90 plus days is the market leader. That is who you study.

A competitor with 1 to 3 ads live for under 30 days is testing or struggling. Their lessons are not yet validated.

A competitor with zero ads has chosen not to play the game. You are not competing with them. You are competing with the 20 ad operators.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN THE LEADER

Once you identify the leader, you reverse engineer their creative strategy.

Look at the hook patterns. Are they leading with the pain point, the offer, or the proof. Are they using owner on camera or stock footage. Are they running video or static. What is the average ad length on the videos that have been running 90 plus days. Those are the winners.

Look at the offer pattern. What is the headline offer. What is the guarantee or risk reversal. What is the deadline. Are they running seasonal promotions or evergreen.

Look at the creative refresh cadence. Are they shipping new ads every week or every month. Cadence is a clue to their internal creative capacity.

You are not copying. You are studying. The leader has spent six figures testing what works in your market. You can shortcut that learning curve by reading their library carefully.

WHEN A COMPETITOR HAS NOTHING RUNNING

This is the more common scenario for most home service markets.

You search 5 competitors. Three have nothing. One has a single boosted post. One has 2 generic free quote ads.

That tells you the market is wide open on paid social. The owners in your zip code are not running ads or are running them poorly. You can show up with a real offer and a real creative system and take market share inside 90 days.

This is the situation most home service owners do not realize they are in. They assume the market is saturated on Meta. They look. It is not. Saturation lives on Google search. Paid social is wide open in most home service categories.

THE SPY STACK BEYOND META AD LIBRARY

Meta Ad Library is the start. The full free spy stack also includes.

Google Maps reviews. Pull the competitor reviews from the last 90 days. Look for repeat complaints. Those are your differentiation hooks.

Their website. Read the offer copy. Is there a guarantee. Is there a clear deadline. What does their landing page above the fold look like.

Their Google Business Profile. How many photos. How recent. Are they responding to reviews. That is a proxy for operational tightness.

Their LinkedIn. Are they hiring. What roles. Hiring patterns reveal what they are scaling next.

All of this is free. All of this is public. None of this is being used by most home service owners.

A SECOND APPLICATION OWNER VETTING

Beyond competitive intel, Meta Ad Library is also the best owner vetting tool I know.

Before you take ad advice from any owner, pull them up. If they are not running ads themselves, their opinion is theoretical at best. If they are running ads, look at the volume and longevity. The owner with 30 ads running 60 plus days has the right to give advice. The owner with zero or one does not.

This includes agency vetting. Before you hire an agency, pull up their case study clients in Meta Ad Library. Are those clients running ads now. Are they running the kind of ads the agency claims to ship. If the case study is real, the receipts are public.

WHAT TO DO THIS WEEK

Spend 30 minutes in Meta Ad Library this week.

Pull your top 5 competitors. Screenshot the first frame of every ad that has been running 30 plus days. Document the offers. Document the hooks. Document the cadence.

Then build the opposite. Different hook, different offer, different visual style. Launch it and watch your CPL.
