Everyone blames Facebook for bad leads. "The leads are garbage." "Nobody wants service." "They're all tire kickers." I hear it from home service business owners every single week.
But when I actually look at their lead forms, the answer is obvious. The form is making it too easy for the wrong people to submit.
One of our electrical clients was getting a flood of leads that went nowhere. When we dug into who was actually submitting the forms, we found something interesting. A huge chunk of the submissions were from people in retirement communities who had no intention of booking service. They were tapping through the form on their phone, clicking options like "electrical inspection" or "panel upgrade" without actually needing anything.
The multiple choice dropdown format was the problem. When all someone has to do is tap a button, there's zero friction. People can accidentally submit a form in 3 seconds without putting any thought into it.
We made one change. We replaced the multiple choice dropdown with a short form text box. Instead of clicking "electrical inspection" from a list, leads now have to type in what they actually need.
That's the entire change. One field.
The bad leads vanished almost immediately. Here's why it works:
You can't accidentally type "I need my electrical panel replaced because we're adding a hot tub" the same way you can accidentally tap a button. The text box creates just enough friction to filter out anyone who doesn't have a real need.
The leads who do submit are now pre qualified before they even hit your inbox. You can read exactly what they need in their own words, which means your sales team knows the situation before they even pick up the phone.
Most home service businesses think lead quality is a platform problem. They blame Facebook, they blame the targeting, they blame the audience. But nine times out of ten, the problem is the form itself.
Your form is either working for you or against you. If it's too easy to submit, you're going to get flooded with people who clicked something by accident. If it requires even a small amount of effort, you're going to get people who actually want what you're selling.
Before you cancel your Facebook ads because the leads are bad, look at your form first. The fix might be as simple as one field.
